Why Sustainability?

The main reason is because global warming has arrived in front of our doorstep. Without proper consideration and action, global warming can and will endanger our earth and our future generations. Many studies have found that human activities are the main cause of global warming. It is our responsibility to act and stop this future global disaster to occur. Sustainability is not just for greenies, it is an integral part of everyone’s lives because it will determine how our future will be. This is the world you live in, where we breathe the same air and swim in the same ocean.

What is global warming? It is the increase in global temperatures caused by the emission of gases that trap the sun's heat in the Earth's atmosphere. These gases called green house gases (GHG) and their concentration has increased steadily during this past century in our atmosphere. Pollution, deforestation, coal usage as electricity sources, and many human activities have contributed a lot to GHG. The result, our global average surface temperature has risen steadily as well.

Global warming has significant negative impacts to our earth. To name a few:

  • The melting of ice that leads to rise in sea level, which will bring major consequences to million of people living in low-lying coastal zone area.
  • Unpredictable weather that will make uncommonly dry-season and catastrophic flooding.
  • The two impacts above will create chain reactions that will affect our health, agriculture, forest, water resource, coastal areas, natural habitat, flora, and fauna.

Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which brought such devastation, is a grieve example of the impact of global warming. Global warming has increased the sea temperature and as it becomes warmer, the strength of the wind increases and create greater hurricane. If you would like to learn other examples of the potential threats of global warming, I highly recommend you to watch a movie called ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ by Al Gore. This is a great movie which portrays what the future will be if we do not start acting now to preserve this world. These links will give you further information concerning this movie:

This reason alone is enough to justify the implementation of sustainability concept because our earth is the stake. However, to strengthen my point, in the next post I will provide you with direct benefits in implementing the concept.
